The 40th annual National Science Olympiad is coming home to MSU! We are celebrating this milestone by hosting the Science Olympiad National Tournament where it started in 1985—at Michigan State University.

Science Olympiad has deep, multigenerational roots in Michigan. Many of our young volunteers have grandparents who participated in the program. We are excited and proud to invite our Science Olympiad family home to East Lansing, May 24–25, 2024.

Science Olympiad is a nonprofit that has developed into one of the largest and most enduring STEM competitions in the United States, with participation from all 50 states and guest teams from Japan. Two divisions—B (grades 6–9) and C (grades 9–12)—compete at the state and national level.

Science Olympiad has a history of diversity, drawing students from a range of ethnicities and socioeconomic groups. Approximately 50 percent of competitors are female, despite national trends of approximately 25 percent female representation in the STEM workforce.

Science Olympiad competitions consist of teams of 15 students competing in 23 or more individual events. These events represent all the STEM disciplines: science, technology, engineering, and math. Designed by educators, all events incorporate Next Generation Science Standards and encourage active participation in life science, earth science, physical science, chemistry, and engineering.

Our long-running (40+ years) state tournament has proven to be an effective outreach and recruiting tool, attracting a diverse set of science and engineering undergraduates to Michigan State University. The Science Olympiad National Tournament affords us the opportunity to bring thousands of enthusiastic student competitors from all corners of the United States to experience our amazing MSU campus and our many state and national partners.

We invite you to be a part of our 40th anniversary celebration. Welcome home to MSU!
